VPR News: Nuclear Waste Dump Expansion Vote To Come Before Inauguration: "(Shumlin) 'I would urge our two commissioners to not get on the plane to Texas to give my administration the time to really evaluate the deal and make sure it's as good as it can be."
Officials with the outgoing Douglas administration will vote in favor next week of expanding a nuclear waste dump that Vermont shares with Texas.
That's even though Governor-elect Peter Shumlin asked that the vote be delayed so his staff could have time to evaluate the plan. The plan, incidentally, that's been in the works for eight years.
This didn't just come up now as part of some nefarious plan to annoy the coming Shumlin administration as Shumlin seems to imply: (Shumlin) "Well, it seems more than coincidence that they would rush to have a meeting two days before I'm sworn in as governor knowing that I have real concerns about this agreement.
Shumlin is upset the vote is taking place Jan. 4, two days before he takes office. Jim Douglas is governor until Jan. 6. If anyone can ask that the vote be delayed, that would be Governor Douglas.
Peter Shumlin isn't governor yet. Someone needs to remind him that he almost lost the election and that he has nothing remotely resembling a mandate from Vermont voters to dictate the way he wants things to go before he's even sworn in.
