Hiring based on skin color doesn't promote "diversity" it promotes racism. Martin Luther King Jr. said "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." The school board is admittedly judging people by the color of their skin.
Six of 30 new teachers hired for the current school year are people of color, said Jeanne Collins, superintendent of Burlington schools. Though the overall numbers in the district are still low, the new hires represent progress, she said. “We’re excited, we’re celebrating the success. We also recognize that it’s just the beginning.”This is success? Just the beginning? What are we teaching our children when we promote the hiring of people based on the color of their skin? Isn't discrimination based on race illegal? This is the same school board, incidentally, who decided to celebrate the end of Ramadan this year with an official day off for Eid ul-Fitr, a Muslim holiday.
Last winter a group of parents, staff and students were critical of the school district for wanting to hire the most qualified applicants for two principal positions because they were white.
