I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice! And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue. -- Barry Goldwater

Politics, Religion, And The Constitution

The founders of the constitution believed in a power greater than themselves which they referred to as God. They did not refer to any particular religion or church or denomination.
The fact is the phrase "separation of church and state" is not used in the Constitution. What it says is "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof...". In other words, the Constitution remains neutral regarding religion but gives the people the right to practice a religion of their choice or to not practice any religion.
So can religion be a measure of patriotism or political leanings or citizenship? Why do we hear so much about right wing Christians but never left wing Christians? Conservative Christians but never liberal Christians? Over time, generally, the right has established Christianity with their politics and the left has prohibited it with theirs. However, there is nothing wrong with this according to the Constitution. There is nothing wrong with mixing politics and religion as long as congress is not making laws respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.
It is not unconstitutional for a judge to keep a copy of the Bible in the courtroom or for a minister in a church to pray for the President. Logically, it is not unconstitutional, for example, to pray in a public school. When I was in public school we had a moment of silence in home room and the next moment stood and recited the Pledge of Allegiance at the start of each school day and were much better off for it. It gave us boundaries and provided context in our daily lives.
Politically "correct" progressivism ( aka marxist, socialist, communism) of the past fifty years has distorted, disparaged and marginalized the Constitution to bring us to the point we are today where we have institutionalized religious persecution.
